What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at WWE Smackdown 1/4/13. How does the first SD of 2013 fair? Let's find out and start the review.
We open up the show with Randy Orton. He talks about winning the Royal Rumble, but Sheamus has to have the same agenda as well. Big Show talks about cuisine, while Antonio Cesaro talks about Americans. What it all boils down to is a tag team match for later tonight. There wasn't much to report, but at least you get early development in the Royal Rumble match. I love how anybody can say they are in the RR and that's that. Remember when you had to win matches to earn your way in the RR match? Neither do I.
Match #1: Miz vs Heath Slater
For some reason, we get this match because of what happened between Miz and 3MB a month ago at TLC. It's like they're trying to make you care about something that not very many people remember. I completely forgot about this until they showed the recap. Once McIntyre and Mahal get ejected, this match actually turned out pretty well. I was actually surprised by this match. It was given a fair amount of time and Slater looked pretty good. Part of me hopes 3MB will get a bone thrown towards them later this year. The finish comes when Miz hits Skull Crushing Finale for the clean victory.

Match #2: Khali, Hornswoggle, and Natalya vs Puerto Rican Express
So, how do Khali and Natalya do the….you know…..Anyway, let's move on. Khali and crew win this match. It's a comedy match and we shall move on from it. As I'm writing this, I imagine somebody is raging over Khali's presence.
Winner via pinfall: Khali, Hornswoggle, and Natalya
Match #3: Wade Barrett vs Kofi Kingston; IC Championship
Kofi believes this is last shot to win the IC championship. Yeah, cuz if he loses, he'll end up falling in what I would like to call "The Black Hole of non-thinking" You get this when your creative staff isn't sure what to do with a talent. Instead of doing something right away, you just hang around for a while until they think of something for you. And sometimes, they just won't think of anything for you at all. Once again, we at least get another good match between Kofi and Wade. Kofi came close to winning this match, but Wade was just a little too smart for Kofi. The finish comes when Wade hits Kofi with the Bull Hammer. I hopefully see Wade actually do something with the IC title. It really hasn't meant much for some time and it can use some prestige once more. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

Match #4: Tamina vs Layla
They kinda just stopped Tamina's alliance with Vickie Guerrero. Does anybody even remember that? You can sometimes tell when the creative staff immediately scraps an idea based on what happened to Tamina. She hits the Superfly Splash for the victory.

Match #5: Big Show and Antonio Cesaro vs Randy Orton and Sheamus
Love how in the Raw Rebound, they edited out John Cena's screw up of talking about how many relationships AJ had. Cena can only count up to three. Antonio's teaming with an American? Can he do that? The match was pretty fair. The finish comes when Sheamus is about to go for the Brogue Kick, but Randy decides to sneak in the RKO on Antonio. Sheamus didn't look happy about Randy's actions, but decides to pick the bones on Antonio. So, we get a classic example of Randy and Sheamus flexing their muscles to show that they mean business as we start the road to the Royal Rumble. Right now, it isn't clear on who's gonna win this match, but you do have to look at guys like Sheamus and Randy as early favorites for the big event. Right now, I say the top favorite is none other than…..Doink the Clown. I think this is gonna be his year. You just wait and see.

Overall Impression:
I actually enjoyed tonight's SD. It was mostly a filler show, but the match quality was pretty good for tonight's show. I didn't think they had a lot going on, which is why you had a lot of the matches eat up the time. If we can't get new storylines and/or you're gonna roll out the filler, the least you can do is make out with the wrestling quality. I'll admit the show doesn't have a whole lot to offer, but it's a nice show if you're looking for a distraction. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. This was quite a filler show with the title match and the main event being worth while to watch. I guess they are saving followup from the Shield confrontation on RAW to next Monday. Why do I have a feeling the Shield will attack the Rock? Hmm....
ReplyDeleteAnd I was hoping for some angle with the tag division but I guess that is all put aside until the Royal Rumble is over.
Ah, the weeks leading up to the Royal Rumble, where wrestlers competed against each other for spots in the event, especially for the coveted number 30. And, sometimes, if a wrestler lost a qualifying match, he wound up with the dreaded number 1 spot.
