WrestlingNerd Presents: TNA Genesis 2013 Review (Genesis doesn't what Nintendon't)

What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at TNA Genesis 2013. Was the first PPV of 2013 any good? Let's find out and begin.

Match #1: Nacho Libre vs Giant Pornstars; TNA Tag titles
We open up the show with the tag title match. In a fair match, Chavo and Hernandez win with their tag combo. I was liking the build for this match, but I found the match to be pretty boring. It was a bit of a letdown. Well, that's not the best way to start off one of the only four TNA PPVs of the year. Hopefully, this is just a minor slip, right……right….RIGHT?

Winner via pinfall and still TNA Tag Champs: Chavo Guerrero and Hernandez

Match #2: Mr. Anderson vs Samoa Joe
Apparently, Anderson is bitter at various TNA talents since nobody saved him when Aces and Eights kicked his ass all those months ago. So, instead of seeking revenge against the people that attacked him, he teams up with those guys to seek revenge against people he doesn't like? Oh, but that makes perfect sense for Mr. Asshole. Let's not take THAT away from him. As of right now, we still aren't sure if Anderson is with Aces and Eights or is just working his own agenda. At this point, I really don't care since I've explained my feelings on Mr. Anderson's character for the last year. It's gonna take a lot from TNA in order to make me start pay attention to him, but let's be fair and give it a chance. The match is okay, but I just couldn't find myself getting into the contest. I don't know what it is, but Mr. Anderson matches just make me sleepy. The finish comes when Mike Knox arrives to cause enough of a distraction for Anderson to hit the Mic Check for the victory. I love how TNA goes back and forth calling him "Mike Knox" and "That one guy". It makes you think that TNA is too lazy and uncreative enough to even come up with a goofy name for him. I'm just gonna call him Overweight Beard Guy. That's something we can all get down with.

Winner via pinfall: Mr. Anderson

Match #3: Christian York vs Kenny King; X Division Tournament
I love how TNA expects you to care for a tournament that was slapped together at the last moment. Well, at least TNA tried to do something a little different. York managed to pull off the victory. I think the idea was to get York over with the fans. TNA really seems high on this guy for some reason. After the match, Kenny takes his frustrations on York.

Winner via pinfall: Christian York

Match #4: RVD vs Christian York; X Division Title match
I was pretty disappointed by this. While York winning the title would be premature, it just seems a bit odd to have York get close, but no cigar. Still, the evening was about York getting over with fans, so he really didn't need to win the last match. I guess one positive out of this whole thing is adding more stock for York. The finish comes when RVD wins with the Frog Splash.

Winner via pinfall and still X Division: RVD

Match #5: Devon vs Joseph Park
I love how Devon is struggling to beat up a lawyer. Maybe all that lard softens up the majority of his blows? I'm not gonna be too harsh on this one since Joseph is still playing the timid, lawyer gimmick, so I can't grade this the same way I would your typical wrestling match. At the same time, nothing really happens here. If you've seen one Joseph Park match, you've seen them all. He isn't doing much on the attack, but manages to stick in there to almost pull off the miracle. The finish comes when Joseph hits the Black Hole Slam in the middle of Abyssing-up, but snaps out of it. This leads to Devon getting a rollup victory while Joseph is confused. I love how Devon holds up the TV title after the match? That would be the equivalent of me making a championship out of paper and being proud of it.

Match #6: Knockout Gauntlet Match
What can I really say about this match? It was simply just there. Gail Kim gets the first couple of victories until Velvet Sky ends up getting the final victory. One thing to note is Gail had her foot under the rope during the pinfall, so that could be used to prolong the KO title match. That's almost the only storyline that got any progression tonight. That's ridiculous. Velvet is the new #1 Contender to the KO title. Fan-service will give you KO title matches. That's now it works.

Winner: Velvet Sky

Match #7: James Storm vs Christopher Daniels
This was probably the second best match of the night. I still think the feud between these two is forced, but I think I can get behind this if they do it right. The finish comes when Kaz causes enough of a distraction for Daniels to get his feet on the ropes for leverage. Wait, how does that even work? I guess it puts more pressure on your shoulders to kick out, but I just found it as an excuse for the wrestler to do some last-minute yoga. This outcome makes the feud continue. I don't mind the rivalry continuing, but I hope to see something that really brings you into watching this feud. Right now, it just looks like they are feuding with each other because the creative staff wasn't sure what else to do.

Winner via pinfall: Christopher Daniels

Match #8: Sting vs Doc
Watching Bully Ray talk about his fire-breathing twittah machine is sad these days. Hopefully, something at the 'wedding' makes Bully come back to his senses. Bully Ray is awesome, but this 'Buddy' Ray sucks. I'm sorry, but having him be cute towards Brooke Hogan is just offsetting. After a pre-match beat down attack by Card Games, that still isn't enough to take out Sting. Sting wins this match with the Scorpion Death Drop. Director of Chaos? Come on, he couldn't even beat Chaos Zero….

This stable really has nothing going for it. I don't really mind Sting getting the victory here, but it doesn't make Aces and Eights look any better when they can't win anything. After the match, Aces and Eights are about to attack Sting, but Bully saves Sting. That's what happens when you cross Buddy Ray. Your friendly, neighborhood friend that's dating a chick that's 15-18 years younger than him.

Winner via pinfall: Sting

Match #9: Jeff Hardy vs Austin Aries vs Bobby Roode; TNA World Title
I freakin' love this. Bobby and Aries combine to create the Human Transformer. Unfortunately, it cannot stand up to the Megatron title. I thought you were made of sterner stuff? If you continued watching this, you also saw Bobby shout instructions for Aries to do an attack. Are you giving instructions or dancing the night away? This was probably the best match of the night, but what really made it for me was Roode's instructions. I'm actually being serious right now. Once the team of Aries/Roode crumbles, both guys start fighting each other. Nice to see a new bag of tricks from the writers…..or a bag of cliches. I forget which one at this point. Hardy and Aries end up picking up a double pinfall on Bobby, but Hardy is the only one that gets credit. There really wasn't any reason to do this. I guess it further fueled Aries' hatred towards Hardy, but that's a stretch. The finish comes when Hardy hits the Swanton Bomb for the victory. Hardy wins the championship and….that's it. The show's over……y-you can go home now. Highlight of this PPV was the Human Transformer.

Winner via pinfall and still TNA World Champion: Jeff Hardy

Overall Impression:
Sigh….I feel tired. I feel tired because this PPV had nothing going for it. I thought the idea of shortening up the PPV schedule was to make them mean something? This PPV really has nothing going for it. It wasn't bad, but this is not what I would call PPV quality. This PPV felt like nothing more than filler. I know it's common for PPVs to fall in this category, but I was expecting something a little more. After all, TNA is only gonna have three more PPVs for the rest of this year. I thought the reasons for taking out the traditional 12 PPVs a year is to take out the filler shows and put the bigger events on PPV. Well, that really wasn't the case. I felt bored while watching this PPV. Nothing happens while you watch Genesis. Was there decent wrestling matches? Yes, but I was hoping for a little more in the storyline department. If I have to give TNA Genesis 2013 a score between 1-10 and 5 considered average, I have to give this PPV a 3 out of 10. It really wasn't that bad (I would normally consider this slightly below average, or 4 out of 10), but I had to take a point off because TNA shortened up their PPV schedule and filler is unacceptable. If you take out the main event, you have nothing to really witness. TNA PPVs are supposed to mean something with the new schedule, but what's the point if you're gonna use one of your four PPVs to produce filler? This whole evening was just a waste of time and doesn't feel like PPV. I would be fine if this was an episode of Impact, but you expect more with PPV. To be fair, TNA only had a month to build up this showing. I can try to be a little easier on them and expect more from them with the other PPVs, but they really should've planned this better. Hopefully, they will take the mistakes and try to improve on the shows. If TNA really wants to make this PPV change mean something, they need to do much better and keep the filler on Impact. I hate being that guy who has to be negative on this company since it's so overdone on the internet, but I cannot accept this. I would be lying if I said I enjoyed this. Well, I better wrap this up before I continue to piss off more TNA die-hards. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. I apologize for the Best and Worst of 2012 delay, but something came up from my end to delay things. I should have Part One up in the middle of the week. Tell me what you thought of my review or tonight's show. I will see you guys and girls in the next one.

WrestlingNerd's Official Score of TNA Genesis 2013: 3 out of 10

  1. I'm willing to give them a pass on the lack of a big feeling for the ppv, they only just put the new structure in and I'm guessing some of the booking was put in place when they thought they were doing monthly ppv's.
They now have until March for their next ppv so they have 2 months to put together a show with a big event feel to it, and after that the in your house, I mean one night only ppv's start up to fill in the gaps so it is important that they make the big ppv's feel like big ppv's

  2. Unlike WWE, I believed that TNA had the big three (Slammiversary, Lockdown and Bound for Glory) and they're trying to make Genesis as big as them. I know a lot of people what them to build 2-3 months towards each PPV, but I feel that they might build up the 6-7 specials more to get people interested in them. They may need to look at the WWE to see how they build up their Royal Rumble to help build up Genesis better.

    1. lol sorry, but the royal rumble is the same shit each year. some guys come out and say they enter it, and thats it.
the buildup is really bland for me, however the rumble match itself is cool because wwe has this hate for the undercard and you get the feeling like they could win in this match.
plus they always bring guys back you wouldnt expect.
its like mania for me, i watch wrestling for over a year now and all the talk about mania...
and then the entire buildup consists of two dudes looking at a sign dramatically. i guess buildup is not of wrestlings strengths these days.
not to say tnas buildup or the ppv itself was any good. i hate brooke.

  3. I'm guessing TNA isn't sure if the name Mike Knox is trademarked by WWE. Though if it is, they can just make a variation of it.

  4. I never considered Genesis to be one of TNA's big PPVs, unlike LockDown, Slammiversary and Bound for Glory. Maybe they need to change the name of the January PPV into either one of the others they have or come up with a new one.

  5. I get that he's over with the fans, but there is no reason for Sting to be wrestling in 2013. They should be putting young guys who can wrestle in there to cover up the shortcomings of a guy like Doc, not an old man. I genuinely quite like Sting and Hogan as face authority figures. There isn't too much 'screwing' people in that role, they are popular and it does not involve them wrestling.

They need to get the floundering mid-card guys like Anderson into a tag team or something. That division needs guys and he isn't ever getting near the World belt (well, I hope not) so why not put him in a team with someone who can wrestle (Anderson can be the talker). I agree with the article as his matches are rrather dull. The only one I can remember enjoying for a long time was that brutal match with Bully Ray on PPV where they botched the ending.

The main event was very good, but I wish Hardy had been beaten. The most ironic thing about Roode's pre-match interview, in particular, is that you are meant to think the heel is cocky and not like what he says. Well, I agreed with him that he and Aries are better wrestlers than Hardy. So, um, that doesn't work when the heel says the truth!

I love TNA, but this wasn't their best PPV. Hopefully they will build stories and things better from now on! I would also LOVE it (it won't happen) if Daniels won the World title.
