WrestlingNerd Presents: WWE Smackdown Review 8/3/12 (Ohhhhhh My Goodness...)

What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at WWE Smackdown 8/3/12. Who was named the new SD General Manager? Let's find out and start the review.

We open up the show with Vince McMahon. Vince announces that Booker T is the GM of SD. I think Vince was on SD for a whole two-seconds. Now if you excuse him, he needs to get back to a program that he's more interested in. Before Booker can talk about this opportunity, Alberto Del Rio interrupts to kiss Booker's ass. Booker is not impressed with Del Rio's lips, so Sheamus arrives and talks about having a drink, fella. Booker puts both Del Rio and Sheamus in a match tonight, but Del Rio said he doesn't want to compete until SummerSlam. Silly Del Rio, only 2-3 people get special treatment in this company….

Yeah, I expect to get some hate for that one. Anyway, it will be Del Rio vs Randy Orton, and Sheamus vs Tensai. As far as how I feel about Booker being GM, I'm okay with it. I thought this was a better idea than having Teddy Long or Mick Foley being the GM. Unfortunately, that means we get to hear more of Michael Cole's antics……yeeeeeaaaaaah? Well, you win some, you lose some. I'm gonna miss Booker's one-liners while on commentary.

Match #1: Sheamus vs Tensai
This was a physical match. Tensai had some bruises and cuts during this match. Damn, Sheamus. It's just a match. The finish comes when Sheamus hits the Brogue Kick for the victory. I will assume that Tensai killed Sakamoto again since he lost another match. So, that's twice in one week that Sakamoto has been killed off. Maybe he and Paul Bearer can start a club. Did Cole just say, "shucky ducky quack quack" towards Sheamus? When Booker did this, it was towards the divas. Is there something Cole isn't telling us?

Winner via pinfall: Sheamus

Eve tries to talk herself into another power position, but Booker ends up passing her up and gives Teddy Long a senior advisor position. In other words, Teddy has found himself back on SD. It's probably the best place for him. I love how Booker gives Eve the bad news. I really wasn't big on Eve has an authority figure, so this isn't a major loss.

Match #2: Antonio Cesaro vs Santino
In case you missed last week's show, you get to watch it again, but with minor tweaks. Well, there was a few things different about this match. Santino actually hit the Cobra, but Cesaro had his foot underneath the rope. To show that amazing memory loss of the wrestlers, Santino is stunned to hear about the rope break rule. I know it shouldn't surprise me, but this seems too stupid for Santino's character. Anyway, the finish comes when Antonio hits the Gotch Neut. for the victory. Hopefully, we can see some type of championship match the next time these two face off.

Winner via pinfall: Antonio Cesaro

Match #3: Chris Jericho, Christian, and Kane vs Dolph Ziggler, Miz, and Daniel Bryan
Bryan's interview was hilarious. In fact, Bryan was the star of tonight's show. The man has completely lost it, and that's what makes him awesome. This match was decent to watch. The finish comes when Jericho hits the Codebreaker on Dolph……if that's what you want to call it. Dolph introduced the MITB briefcase as a weapon, but it looked like he hit Jericho with the case, followed by the Codebreaker. Then again, analyzing it any further would show that I care, which I don't. Bryan ends up scoring a rollup on Jericho for the victory. After the match, Bryan is arguing with the fans. I wouldn't be surprised if you saw Bryan pop a blood vessel during this scene. YES NO YES NO YES NO YES NO!!!

Winner via pinfall: YES! NO!

Match #4: Ryback vs Jinder Mahal
Another match that we see for a second straight week. Then again, I'm fine with this one considering how the match ended last week. Ryback cut a video promo this week. He talked about food and feeding him. Ryback looks like the kind of person that would eat people. Seriously, look at this guy? I'll do whatever you say, just don't eat me. The finish comes when Jinder uses a mic on Ryback, thus resulting in a DQ. Once again, Jinder runs away. Hey, I'm just glad they are finally giving him a mini-rivalry. It's about time.

Winner via DQ: Ryback

Match #5: Darren Young vs R-Truth
Well, it appears there has been no punishment for AW's joke…..At least at the time I'm writing this. I know AW made a mistake the other night, but I hope he doesn't get too much of a punishment. I enjoy what he's doing with the Prime Time Players. The finish comes when Titus O'Neil and AW cause a lot of distractions. Darren is able to take advantage and hits the Gut Check for the victory. So, the PTP steal two matches this week. In the meantime, Primo and Epico just disappeared from this whole thing. There's that WRESTLING LOGIC once again.

Winner via pinfall: Darren Young

We get to hear Touts from various people. Huzzah? You know you're going overboard with social media when you let random people voice their opinions. And some of these people need to perform some basic hygiene/grooming before turning on their webcams. Seriously, some of those people are gonna be in my nightmares for the next few weeks. Booker and Layla have a backstage scene. Oh yeah…..The Divas Championship is still a concept. I completely forgot about it. Maybe we should talk about it……….Cody Rhodes arrives to mostly be a dick. Because of his antics, Booker books Cody vs Sin Cara for next week. Well, that could be interesting. Cody's character just seems there. The guy has lost a good portion of stock since dropping the IC Championship. I guess Big Show did rule with an iron fist earlier this year……if that's what you want to call it.

Match #6: Randy Orton vs Alberto Del Rio
This match was fair, but I felt it was missing something. I know the internet hates Randy, but casual fans love this guy. Randy gets a lot of hate for his off-field actions and characterization, but the guy does have a couple of redeeming qualities. Oh, people are gonna hate me after the end of this week. The finish comes when Ricardo Rodriguez interferes. Yeah, you know it's a Del Rio match since Ricardo gets involved with the bigger stars on this show. After the match, Del Rio retreats. Sheamus arrives to toss Del Rio back in the ring, thus receiving an RKO. Well, the finish does set up the possibility of Randy getting in the middle of the championship picture……and I'm not sure how I feel about that. The guy just got off a two month suspension for failing a drug test. What kind of image does that send to people when you throw one of your top guys back in the championship picture for doing something wrong? I know people will get on my ass about this, but if this was some no-name wrestler, they would have the book thrown at them. Then again, the same thing could be said if Rey Mysterio got in the middle of this. Speaking of which, where was he? Did he just give up on getting revenge on Del Rio? Mysterio was present….in spirit.

Winner via DQ: Randy Orton

Overall Impression:
What made this show stand out was Daniel Bryan. Seriously, he's the funniest character to watch at this moment. I might even go further to say that this show would be totally skippable if it weren't for Bryan. Outside of Bryan, everything else was just there. SD did stress most of their current storylines, but it wasn't what I would call exciting. The matches were fair, but I don't really see myself watching these matches again. I'll give Booker some credit. I think he can do fine as an authority figure, and I felt he did help out the show with some of his moments/jokes. Not the worst episode, but not the greatest one either. I think it's worth a watch, but mainly just to see Bryan. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. As always, tell me what you thought of my review or tonight's show. I will see you guys and girls on the next WrestlingNerd show. See you next time.

  1. I'm going to miss Booker T's commentary, his fave five were always a highlight
although William Regal would have been a better choice, after all I don't think Booker T can do this http://www.tout.com/m/toc6dd?ref=tw809bu0

    or this http://www.tout.com/m/u5x3g3?ref=twq138g7

  2. Again great review, but we get that Smackdown isn't Vince McMahon's golden show. I'd like to cut it a little slack. Sometimes Smackdown is better than Raw.
    1) Booker T is GM of Smackdown...YES YES YES!!!
    2) I loved the match between Tensai and Superfella, but what happened to Sheamus' anger. It was the best part of him and the original part. Did Cena completely turned him boring? Also, what is the deal with the video of Tensai before the match? We get that his "dominance" in the WWE WAS supposed to make him a great heel, but the video was just funny like the "it's so stupid that it is funny." *facepalm*
    3) Someone has finally answered my prayers and is taking out that doofus Santino. Maybe the US championship will mean something again. One thing though, remember the European Championship and how it was underneath the IC title. I think that the US title is starting to be the European title.
    4) The tag team match was great, but I want more promo time with Jericho and Ziggler.
    5) Daniel Bryan+Air time=$$$ Please WWE follow that formula.
    6) Nice to see Ryback doing something with his time other than squash jobbers.
    7) Kofi and Truth need to leave the tag team picture. Primo and Epico vs. PTP is what I want to see.
    8) NO MORE TOUTS!!! We don't care. Sure I can see people excited to get their 15 minutes oh I mean seconds of fame, but to the audience we don't care. If I want to see stuff like that I would read comments on WWE.com which most comments are of people sucking the Cena cock. Why are the comments on this blog more enjoyable than comments on WWE.com?
    9) What is missing is the evil side of Randy Orton. I seem to be rooting for the heels more than the faces, because all the faces seem to be boring. None of them have any real charisma. Remember when Sheamus was a heel and fought Cena? That was great. Remember when Orton punted everybody that came in the ring with him. Priceless! Orton should of punted Del Rio, and that would of made the title scene much more interesting.
    10) Where the hell was Damien Sandow? Screw Rey. I want to see the savior of the unwashed masses.

  3. Daniel Bryan rocks!!! And I too want to see more of Damien Sandow and less of some of these other guys like Del Rio, Prime Time Players, etc.!!!

I would like a renewed focus on tag team wrestling, but PTP's just are so green and not that interesting.

And doesn't it seem like Smackdown just repeats a lot of matches from Raw with little tweaks???

Oncea again, Thank God for Daniel Bryan, let him loose -- I'd love a "new" Roddy Piper type character!!!!

  4. Thanks for another great recap of Smackdown, WN. I missed it Friday night because I was stuck working late at DISH. I wanted to get all caught up before tonight’s episode of Raw; I went straight to DISHOnline.com and streamed it from their free section. I have to agree with you about Daniel Bryan stealing the show. Now that he has lost it, he is actually kind of entertaining to watch. My overall impression of the show was a positive one if only for the fact that there were surprisingly few Squash matches for an episode of Smackdown. I’m about to sit down for Raw and I really hope I can manage to stay away for the full 3 hours.
