WrestlingNerd Presents: WWE Smackdown Review 6/1/12

What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at WWE Smackdown 6/1/12. Can the blue brand be that stand-out show for this week? Let's find out and start the review.

We open up the show with Sheamus. He talks about his match against Alberto Del Rio at No Way Out. Carlton Banks interrupts Sheamus and wants an apology from Sheamus for the tackle that happened on Raw last week. Does anyone really care about this angle? Sheamus refuses to apologize to John Laurinaitis and says if Otunga isn't careful, he will get that coffee mug shoved up his arse. Hey, is that anyway to treat Jennifer Hudson's stuff? Del Rio interrupts and talks about becoming the next WHC at the PPV. Otunga announces that Del Rio gets to choose Sheamus' opponent for tonight. Sheamus takes the news so well that he ends up Brogue Kicking Otunga's head. I'm convinced there's no coffee in that mug. Nothing spilled out of that thing. Anyway, this was a very basic opening. There really isn't a whole lot to report here. The scene was so basic that it…..that it makes me want to fall asleep…..

Match #1: Sin Cara vs Heath Slater
Sin Cara makes his return after seven months, so that means the debut of a new ranger outfit. Either that or they are doing the impostor Sin Cara angel again. I guess we can call this Sin Cara Red/Rojo. It was just a match to get Sin Cara back out to the masses. It was an okay match, but I don't think it was anything special. The finish comes when Sin hits La Mistica for La victory. I am La stupid.

Winner via pinfall: Sin Cara

Match #2: Damien Sandow vs Ezekiel Jackson
Damien was not impressed with Zeke. Then again, I don't think anybody is impressed with Zeke. Anyway, Zeke attacks Damien, which causes him to snap and kill Zeke with the Straight Jacket Neckbreaker. He defeated Zeke……HAAAAALLLLLLLELUJAH!!!

Winner via intelligence: Damien Sandow

In a short backstage scene, Dolph Ziggler persuades Del Rio to fight Sheamus tonight. Del Rio is confident that he can defeat Sheamus, but likes Dolph's attitude and decides to give him the shot. For some reason, Del Rio reminded me of a mob boss in this scene. I kinda like it. I want to see Del Rio do more things like this. I think it can help him out. Plus, he's playing a rich guy, so why not?

Match #3: Ryback vs more jobbers from the great unknown; Handicap match
The jobbers this time around are Ryan Shelton and Chris Lyons. I want some goofy names. I'm kinda disappointed here. Ryback's battle scares seem have healed up from the previous week. I wouldn't be surprised if they got a lot of complaints from parents, so they had to tone it down. I thought it looked pretty cool, but what are you gonna do? Ryback hits the double Muscle Buster on both jobbers. Bring me more……cookies!!! It was twinkles last week, but now it's cookies. Ryback can't make up his mind.

Winner via pinfall: Ryback

Match #4: Sheamus vs Dolph Ziggler
During Vickie Guerrero's introduction, Dolph snatches the mic and seems very serious. I kinda like it. It beats having to see the guy act like a private dancer. This match was awesome. I thought it was given a fair amount of time and they made Dolph look really good. I knew Dolph had this ability in him. He's just been on the back-burner for so long that people were kinda forgetting about him. With Chris Jericho being out of action for another three weeks and Randy Orton getting another suspension, they need to build up a guy like Dolph. Since I mentioned it, it was reported that Randy got hit with a 60-day suspension. Many people on the internet have been wondering if WWE covered up Randy's suspension because this is his third suspension with the company. I don't want to dive into all of that stuff, and I personally don't give a s***. It's all a C O N……spiracy. How's the franchise player of SD going for you, Randy? Anyway, the finish comes when Sheamus hit the Brogue Kick for the victory, but Dolph came close to getting the win. Hopefully, they can use this to help out Dolph.

Winner via pinfall: Sheamus

Match #5: Titus O'Neil and Darren Young vs Santino and Zack Ryder
So, are they gonna call Titus and Darren the Prime Time Players? Yeah, that sounds like it took them a whole two minutes to think of that one. Then again, I can understand since it ate up two minutes off of your three hour meeting. Yeah, that sounds about right. Santino ended up getting a quick roll-up for the victory. I was questioning the booking here, but I guess they wanted to give PTP something to do…..for about a week…..good. I guess they went from "Millions of dollars" to "Hundreds of dollars". Anyway, Big Show arrives after the match and proceeds to kill Ryder and Santino. Why does Santino sound like a goat? Oh well, it isn't important.

Winner via pinfall: Santino and Zack Ryder

In a backstage scene, AJ ends up running into Daniel Bryan. Bryan says CM Punk has no interest in AJ and she is a fool. Bryan even teased the fact that he cared about her once, but Punk doesn't feel the same. Hey…..I like crazy chicks too……I'm….I'm just saying. I thought Bryan was going to go after Kaitlyn? Oh well.

Match #6: Cody Rhodes vs Tyson Kidd
Christian was on commentary for this match. Cody wins with the Cross Rhodes. Yeah, I got nothing else for this part……PINGAS!!!

Winner via pinfall: Cody Rhodes

Match #7: CM Punk vs Kane; WWE Championship match
AJ arrived during this match. AJ is probably the most valuable diva at the moment. Score one for the nerd community. For some reason, I kinda liked this match. It wasn't amazing, but I thought it flowed together decently. Especially when you have to factor in the size difference. The finish comes when Bryan arrives and hits a drop kick on both Punk and Kane. After the match, Bryan hits Punk with a series of Yes stomps, followed by Yes kicks. Kane arrives and his the Yes Chokeslam……no, it was just a Chokeslam. My mistake. Johnny makes his only appearance of the night by making the PPV match a Triple Threat match for the WWE Championship. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I keep thinking that Kane is just there for filler sake since they want to prolong the Punk/Bryan feud. Although, it would be something if Kane meant something bigger in this rivalry, but I kinda doubt it. As for AJ, why do I get the feeling she will go from vegan, to straight edge guy, to the demon from hell? Hey, don't be surprised if AJ starts hanging around Kane. That would be a weird image.

No Contest; CM Punk still WWE Champion

Overall Impression:
While the show wasn't amazing, I honestly thought this was the best wrestling show of the week. The action was not too bad, especially when you had that great Dolph/Sheamus match. The segments were just there, but I would still consider this the best show of the week. In fact, SD has been the best show for the last few weeks. Now, I want to be perfectly clear. This was not a great episode. It was mostly an average show, but I honestly will take average after the last couple of Raw shows. I really hope they can improve on Raw but now we're talking about Raw in a SD review, so that's a cue to wrap this up. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. As always, tell me what you thought of my review or tonight's show. I will see you guys and girls on the next WrestlingNerd show. See you next time.

  1. i liked last nights smackdown.

Wrestling Nerd, you have sold me on dolph ziggler for the past couple of months. I kept looking back at his cheerleading days and the association with Vickie. He has done well with the mid card championships and i like the new focus he has and the new direction they are going with him.

Zack Ryder: Poster boy for getting beaten up in the wwe.

I too would like to see Del Rio as a Don-like-figure. Sending people out to fight for him, collecting promises and maybe gain a "bodyguard" would improve his image.

As always, love your work :D

    2. At this point, it couldn't hurt Del Rio.

  2. Good review, agree with most of what you've said.
I'm not please with a few things the wwe are doing at the moment, e.g. the big show thing. He barely beat cody rhodes a month ago, and now he can destroy the whole locker room? As you'd like to say: WRESTLING LOGIC. haha :')
I'm liking the christian vs cody feud (even though more time is needed), and the cm punk/aj/bryan thing is interesting. Kane's just there to solidify things and hopefully take the pinfall so the rivalry can continue.
Dolph should replace Jericho but who'll replace randy for the time being???

  3. How awesome was that Sin cara match?
His Colors are so well picked that i couldn't make out where ANYONE WAS during that match because it clashed with the lighting into a brown mess.

  4. I think AJ and D. Bryan should be playing everyone (as in they're still a couple) -- that's the twist I'd like to see!!! But only after the Punk/Bryan fued has some more time. Some are speculating Kane was interjected into the mix because the WWE doesn't trust Punk & Bryan to carry the company onward.
Del Rio's still boring (same for Sin Cara, but he's there for the kids) so maybe the Mexican Don idea would work well.

Dolph and Vickie are obviously heading toward another possible break-up and where is the whole Abraham Washington angle? Talk about a way too slow (ala Impact Wrestling) build-up. They should have done something with A.W.'s stable by now.

And oh ya, I agree A.J. is the most valuable diva at this time. Have you noticed how many of them don't even wrestle currently (at least on the main shows)? Eve, the two chicks who dance with Brodus, A.J., etc.

    1. With the whole AW thing, it seems like WWE came up with an idea, but weren't sure where to go with it. I think they are taking a break with it for a short time. Hopefully, not too short or else it will look pretty bad.
