WrestlingNerd Presents: WWE Smackdown Review 9/7/12

What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at WWE Smackdown 9/7/12. Does SD bother to try this week? Let's find out and start the review.

We open up the show with Alberto Del Rio. He talks about being on a roll, but Sheamus' Brogue Kick is evil because it keeps screwing him over…..that, and it might have something to do with Ricardo Rodriguez getting kicked in the face. After all, that's Del Rio's friend. You know, the same guy that gets beat up every week, has to massage your feet, washes your rental cars, and gets pushed around. If that isn't friendship, then I don't know what is. Del Rio claims the Cross Armbreaker is poetry, while the Brogue Kick is criminal. The move that has the name "armBREAKER" is poetry? I'm just gonna leave it at that and move on. David Otunga claims they will sue Booker T if he doesn't ban the Brogue Kick. Ummm, didn't this happen on Raw? Shouldn't they be suing AJ? There's that wrestling logic, once more. Booker comes out and decides to let the fans decide. This is what Raw Active looked like before the internet grew. This would be the theme of the night. Wait, storyline progression on my SD? What is this madness? Well, it was about time they did this on SD. At least it adds more interest to the show.

Match #1: Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara vs Miz and Cody Rhodes
This match wasn't too bad, but it's easy to forget. In fact, this whole thing between Sin Cara and Cody is easy to forget. It really isn't the most intriguing storyline at the moment. The finish comes when Cody screws up and hits Miz. This leads to Rey hitting the 619/Splash combo for Rey. Team Mask wins yet again……Booooo!!! I'll think of something better.

Winner via pinfall: Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara

I'm convinced that as long as the PG era exist, Hornswoggle will always have a job. A comedy segment between Hornswoggle and Daniel Bryan. Hornswoggle fails for the 124359th time to make me laugh, while Bryan continues to make any scene work. Meanwhile, Otunga tries to get Booker to reverse the decision and threatens to sue. Booker will think about it, but Otunga has another trick in mind. To the Jennifer Hudson Mobile!!!

Match #2: Daniel Bryan vs Zack Ryder
Bryan is too much. This man will murder for a hug. I refuse to do anything bad…..until I get a hug. I want a hug….HUG….HUUUUUUG!!! Since Ryder is the biggest tool on this show (He fail for Eve's tricks…..twice. Should I continue?), he takes the bait. Bryan immediately goes for the No Lock. Now, that was a goooooood hug. In fact, Bryan's going for seconds. Because of the continued assault, the referee reverses the decision. Live it up Ryder, that's the closest you'll get to a victory over Daniel.

Winner via Youtube: Zack Ryder

Match #3: Damien Sandow vs Randy Orton
Damien originally came out to talk, but ended up getting thrown into a match. Damien talks about how social media is bulls***. I think they just found a way to make Damien's character even more intriguing. Yes, people need to read books……and the WrestlingNerd Show on Blogger. Anyway, Randy comes out and wants to fight. Before the match started, Dolph Ziggler showed up to do commentary. The finish comes when Sandow runs away, thus Randy wins via countout. After the match, Dolph and Randy fight. Sandow is about to attack Randy, but he ends up running into the RKO. During the finisher, Dolph uses this time to bleach his hair and leave the ring. I still think this Randy/Dolph rivalry is at least interesting to watch.

Winner via countout: Randy Orton

Otunga presents x-rays of a normal person, compared to Ricardo's neck. See, NOW it shows the dangers of the Brogue Kick. Hooray for brain trauma….what? Booker continues to think about it, but puts Otunga in a match against Sheamus. Undefeated law record, my ass!!!

Match #4: Prime Time Players vs Primo and Epico vs Uso; #1 Contender to Tag Team Titles
Kofi Kingston and R-Truth were on commentary for this match. Remember when the Little Jimmy concept was funny? Now, its just sad. The Usos hit the Superfly Splash, but Darren Young tosses him out of the ring to pick the bones. So, the PTP will get another chance at the titles. In the grand scheme of things, the PTP are the guys who have gotten the most exposure, so it made sense to give them the match. If WWE doesn't want to make this look like a waste of time, the PTP NEED to win the titles this go around. They failed the first two tries, but third time should be the charm.

Winner via stealing and NEW #1 Contender to WWE Tag Titles: Prime Time Players

Match #5: Wade Barrett vs Yoshi Tatsu
I remember a time where the IWC hated Wade, but now they seem to love the guy. Just wanted to throw that out there since I've been noticing this. Anyway, Wade destroys the green dinosaur in minutes. After the match, Wade declares it open season. Just don't let John Cena find out about this.

Winner via pinfall: Wade Barrett

Match #6: Sheamus vs David Otunga
Kinda odd that this ended up being the main event, but the story being told was the reason behind that. Sheamus is about to end this match with the Brogue Kick, but Booker interrupts the match and decides to ban the move. Oh no, what will Super Irishman do? Well, the John Cena formula would tell us to that Sheamus would add another finisher or a submission hold to his move-set. Sure enough, that's exactly what happened. Sheamus uses the Texas Cloverleaf for the victory. Knowing how they like to add an Irish pun to all of Sheamus' moves, they will probably call this the Pot of Gold, Luck of the Irish, or Celtic Leaf. Even with this added stipulation, Del Rio will still find a way to lose.

Winner via submission: Sheamus

Overall Impression:
For the first time in months, SD actually progressed a storyline on the show and put together a decent show. One of the reasons I haven't been enjoying SD is because they were doing very little to progress the storylines. I get that Raw is the main show and will get the main coverage, but that isn't any reason to throw SD under the bus. In years passed, SD has shown the ability to progress some great storylines, so there's no reason to stop doing that since Raw has an extra hour. The matches were decent this week, but it was the continuing storyline that kept me invested in tonight's show. Not an amazing show, but I think it was entertaining at the end of the day. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. As always, tell me what you thought of my review or tonight's show. I will see you guys and girls on the next WrestlingNerd show. See you next time.

  1. Couple of things I want to bring up. One, why was the Tag Title contender match not a Fatal 4 Way Tag Team match? I know Gabriel and Kidd aren't a legit tag team like the other three, but if you include them in that brawl a couple of weeks ago and don't put them in the match, it makes their involvment kind of pointless.

I am not a big fan of "*insert move* is banned until further notice" since, at some point, Sheamus will be able to use the Brogue Kick again. But until then, at least he has several other moves to use. Maybe he will use the High Cross again since that hasn't been seen in a while.
