WrestlingNerd Presents: WWE Smackdown Review 9/28/12

What up wrestling fans, I'm the WrestlingNerd bringing you another written review. Today, we take a look at WWE Smackdown 9/28/12. Was the blue brand worth watching this week? Let's find out and start the review.

We open up the show with Big Show. Apparently, Show wants a WHC match. Well, we seem to have a problem since Randy Orton wants a WHC match. No, I want the WHC match!!! No….IIIIII want the WHC match!!!…..eh, it isn't the same. Randy tells people it will either end in RKO or Ko…..or sleep-o. I…..am…..Randy….Orton…..I…..talk…..like…..this…..ehhhhhhh. Alberto Del Rio comes out and wants another WHC match, but is greeted with an RKO. Yeah, I don't know what we would do if we had to witness another Sheamus/Del Rio match. It was announced that Randy vs Show will be a #1 Contender match tonight. Del Rio gets…..a rock. Then again, I couldn't have it any other way. I seriously think Del Rio has had more world title matches than John Cena over the past year. I've never seen a guy in a short amount of time get as many chances as Del Rio. Think about it? Royal Rumble winner, MITB winner, two WWE titles, all the hype, build, and rental cars? It's safe to say WWE has invested a lot of time and money into Del Rio. While I think Del Rio can talk and wrestle, I don't think he's worth all this attention. To be fair, he's gotten better, but he can still be boring.

Match #1: Antonio Cesaro vs Santino; US Title match
I've said this before and I'll say this again. Antonio's entrance theme doesn't suit him. It's terrible. Antonio wins this match with the Neutralizer. For the most part, it was a pointless title defense. I get they want to show Antonio acting on his own, but was it really necessary to make it a title match?

Winner via pinfall and still US Champion: Antonio Cesaro

Match #2: Beth Phoenix vs Natalya
We not only got a diva match that was good, but the most intriguing thing about it is that it told a story. This is something that's really been lacking with the diva division. It seems like a lot of the women/model wrestlers never learned how to tell a story inside the ring. Then again, I can see why you don't see this very much these days. Nobody really cares about the division, so it makes me wonder why I even brought it up. Beth earns this victory with a rollup. Again, the rollup is the most devastating move in women's wrestling. After the match, Eve suspends Beth since she's still convinced that Beth is the attacker. You know, if you know the attacker has blonde hair, wouldn't you have knowledge on the body type of the person as well? I'm just saying, Beth looks different compared to the other divas. Wrestling logic? What's that? In a backstage scene, Booker T reverses the decision and is upset with Eve, but Eve claims that Teddy Long gave her the idea. Booker starts to lose trust in Teddy. I guess if you tell Booker anything, he'll believe it. Eve is the ultimate succubus…..SHE'S EVIL!!!

Winner via pinfall: Beth Phoenix

Match #3: Wade Barrett vs Zack Ryder
Wade kills with the Souvenir. Woo woo woo, you job it!!! He might be open for business, but there doesn't seem to be any business around him.

Winner via squash: Wade Barrett

It's time for Miz TV. Yeah, cuz this went so well the first time you showed it. Tonight's guest is Sheamus. Both guys talk about each of their issues at the moment. Apparently, Miz's career is going downhill, while Sheamus has to defend his title against Randy or Show. Dolph Ziggler interrupts and reminds Sheamus that he still holds the MITB. There goes that element of surprise, but I don't think it was there to begin with. Since the scene is forcing it, we get a fight scene between the two heels and Ronald McCena. Just as you would expect, Sheamus takes out both guys without too much of a problem. Now that he's saved the day, Super Irishman away!!!

Match #4: Rhodes Scholars vs Usos; Tag Team Tournament
Earlier in the night, Booker announced an 8-team tag tournament to determine the new #1 Contender to the tag titles. Well, it's about freakin' time they brought the tournament system back. Remember the days when you had to earn a title match? Anyway, I like this tournament idea. I think it makes things a little more interesting. Things are definitely heating up in the tag division. The finish comes when Cody Rhodes hits Cross Rhodes on one of the Usos for the victory. I would imagine that Rhodes Scholars are the early favorites to win this tournament. In the meantime, Daniel Bryan and Kane should continue their old couple segments. Some of the funniest stuff I've seen out of the WWE in years.

Winner via pinfall: Rhodes Scholars

Match #5: Ryback vs Tensai
It's funny how the commentators think it's a big deal for Ryback to go over Tensai. Kinda hard for me to think that since Tensai is a glorified jobber. Regardless, it seems WWE is has some big plans in store for Ryback. Ryback wins with the Shell Shock.

Winner via pinfall: FEED ME MORE!!!

Match #6: Big Show vs Randy Orton; #1 Contender match
They really have no idea what to do with Del Rio. Alberto attacked Randy before the match and was about to take his spot in the match, but Randy showed up and ended up competing. Because of the Del Rio attack, Randy worked this match "injured". Not a whole lot stood out about this match until the ending. For the most part, the matches were okay at best. The finish comes when Show hits a second Chokeslam on Randy for the victory. After the match, he sends a message towards Sheamus by hitting the KO punch on Randy. Oh no, that means Super Irishman will have to tap into his inner-John Cena….again. Yeah, I don't see this rivalry really going anywhere. I think it's another attempt to make Sheamus look strong. The Del Rio attack does spark the possibility of a Del Rio/Randy rivalry. Well, only time will tell if that's the plan. It doesn't intrigue me that much, but at least it will give them something to do.

Winner via pinfall and NEW #1 Contender to WHC: Big Show

Overall Impression:
SD was nowhere near as much fun as last week, but this wasn't that bad of an episode. The matches were special, but one of the things I liked is the show revolving around other things and not reducing it to a filler show. We had a #1 Contender match, diva build-up, and the announcement of a tag tournament. Not to mention the Miz TV segment featured some decent promo work. Not an amazing episode of SD, but it was fair to watch. That's gonna do it for the review and I hope you enjoyed it. As always, tell me what you thought of my review or tonight's show I will see you guys and girls on the next WrestlingNerd show. See you next time.

  2. I still have to check out the diva match.
Do you think that this shows that they're willing to take the division more seriously, with them takeing this match just a bit more seriously?

    1. I doubt it. If anything, it might've been a way for WWE to convince Beth to resign with the company. I know I don't like dirt sheets, but some of them are right. Then again, who really knows.

  3. despite how ridiculous, non sensical amd completely lacking anything even vaguely resembling sense, I hope the mystery blonde attacker turns out to be Kelly Kelly, just so I can see the reaction out of the IWC. And I wonder if pointing the finger at Beth is just to give her one last hurrah before she leaves or is an effort from WWE to convince her to stay.

And not only are the WWE having an 8 team tournament, they have 8 actual teams in it! Even the most slapped together looking teams have a history of teaming(Santino/Ryder) or have an established reason to team together(Rhodes Scholars). You'd have to go back twenty five years to find that many tag teams in the WWE.

And I guess I'm not getting my super heavyweight fued, although Big Show is probably the best choice for Sheamus to go up against at the moment, no one wants to see another Sheamus/Del Rio match and Sheamus does not have enough crowd support for a match against Orton if WWE want to continue pushing him as their number 2 face behind Cena. Although with Cena's status for Hell in a Cell being a bit iffy I wouldn't be surprised if Sheamus/Big Show becomes a fatal four way with Orton and Del Rio.

    1. That will really throw the IWC off guard considering Kelly Kelly got released two or three days ago.

    2. you have to admit that the idea of the WWE working the iwc by pretending to release Kelly Kelly would be glorious to see in action though

  4. Here is my prediction for the finals of the tag tournament. Rhodes Scholars vs. Faceless Mystery (Rey Mysterio and Sin Cara) with Rhodes Scholars becoming #1 contenders to tie in their attack on Hell No last Monday.

Unfortunately when WWE does something good, it has to balance out with something bad. With the company having a legit tag team division, the mid card titles can no proper feuds and the Divas division continues to lose any hope for being decent.
